Vernacular design: one win and one fail

September 19, 2010

Am obsessed with vernacular design and the wisdom of the masses, for however pretentious that sounds.

You’re supposed to put the bad example first, followed by the successful one, to end on that note, which I shall duly follow.

Fail:

The hours are 8am – 9pm EVERYDAY. But for some reason they are written out for each day. Poor Friday gets another format on top of it all. Super confusing!

Win:

Vernacular Half Off

Walked by this sign and found it super compelling. I think it’s the clean/handwritten/repeated aspect. The composition is strong for each sheet and then the repetition is always engaging for the human eye, I find (cf Bob Gill). I kept trying to figure out if each sheet was separately written or copied.
