Obsessed with how to make toilet paper high

November 9, 2010

I had the rather simplistic idea of printing art onto it but that’s clearly just a one-liner. (But I can’t help but laugh! Which means there’s the germ of a good idea in it!) I was analyzing why that failed and now it’s clear to me: toilet paper is low content, low form; art is high, but PRINTING it onto things is fairly low. So we just get an easy joke of low mapped to low.

The question is how to make low high. So since toilet paper is low form how to make it high. Interestingly and encouragingly, Kenya Hara includes a project in Designing Design of redesigned toilet paper (I’m not sure it’s his); it’s redesigned as square, thus taking up less space in packaging. Manuel also points me to an art with toilet paper project.

I’m not sure where to go or if it’s worthwhile to pursue but it’s such an awful form/topic, it seems like a suitable challenge.
